Who I Am

Hi, I'm Marco Papadopoulos.

Honestly, I think movies are the most beautiful way to waste time. I’ve watched so many that some people admire me for it—while others just shake their heads and smile.

My fascination with film began early on, shaped by unforgettable images: Jim Carrey’s elastic face in The Mask, adventures with Indiana Jones on the couch with my father, the chilling opening of A Clockwork Orange, Buñuel’s razor slicing an eye in Un Chien Andalou, the heartbreaking “Noodles, I slipped” in Once Upon a Time in America, the crooked alleys of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Fellini’s extravagant Casanova.

What started as fascination quickly turned into a vision: I wanted to become a filmmaker. For many, that sounds like an abstract dream—but for me, it became a concrete plan. With a solid academic foundation in media and film studies, I transitioned straight into practice, gaining hands-on experience in the industry and at TV broadcasters.

My feature film debut, Sarmako – A Tale of the North, explores the musical genre of Rembetiko and the Greek Civil War. Inspired by the aesthetics of Theo Angelopoulos and the New Greek Cinema, the film allowed me to develop a personal cinematic language while shedding light on a pivotal moment in Greek history.

Since then, the connection to my homeland has become a recurring theme in my work: from the lives of Greek guest workers in German factories in Gastarbeiter – Sidero & Chaliva, set during the fall of the Junta in 1974, to Maria’s struggle to survive in Germany—and perhaps return to the country she once left—in my upcoming feature film.

I believe in the creative freedom of low-budget filmmaking and am always on the lookout for fresh ideas, new narrative forms, and inspiring collaborations. A film shoot, to me, should feel like a fun school trip: full of energy, shared laughs, long nights, great teamwork…and definitely something tasty to eat.
